Overview
I do personal consultancy in areas related to virtual reality, 3D graphics, new media, ubiquitous computing and mixed reality. I have experience doing prototype building, expert witness work, training, IP evaluation and business process evaluation.
Details about individual areas of consultancy experience are below. I use the facilities of UCL Consultants to deal with contracts and payments.
I give many talks about virtual reality at public events. I would probably be happy to talk at your public event.
Virtual Reality
At UCL we have a couple of decades of experience in virtual reality. Recently, we have developed applications for Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, HoloLens. Magic Leap One and Varjo XR-1.
We can host demonstrations, workshops or training on virtual reality. We have a state-of-the-art CAVE-like system as well as various high-end and consumer VR systems and motion capture systems to demonstrate at such events. We can set up demonstrations at other facilities or events offsite.
We can develop applications and provide support to run demonstrations and evaluations. We have particular expertise in developing in Unity and supporting unusual hardware configurations. One company wanted us to visualise a yacht design for an important client. Another wanted us to prototype a visualisation of a speculative product in one of its contexts of use. Another wanted us to develop a proof of concept consumer VR application and help them test user reactions in trials.
Our HMD-lab, motion capture systems and CAVE-lab are available to rent.
3D Graphics and Games
We have a lot of experience in building and designing interactive 3D graphics systems. For previous clients we have done rapid prototyping of skeleton applications for commercial demonstrations and production of tools to support development or data ingestion processes. We work across numerous platforms, including desktop displays, immersive displays and mobile platforms.
In 2006-2007, I spent six months on secondment to Electronic Arts in Guildford. I worked in a team working on PS3 and XBox 360 development, and I had a hands-on role with the tools team, building parts of the production pipeline for a game. I have also supervised a large number of projects, at undergraduate through to doctoral level, on games technologies.
In 2018-2019, I was a visiting research scientist at Microsoft Research in Redmond, WA.
Training
I have delivered short courses on virtual reality, 3D graphics, visibility analysis, 3D interfaces and networked games. I have also presented a course on a general overview of computing, Internet and new media, for a media company.
I have authored and delivered a few in-depth, longer courses on virtual reality, 3D graphics and networking.
Expert Witness
I have had several roles as an expert in legal proceedings. These include writing expert reports and doing investigation of technology as an adviser. Recently I acted as a testifying witness in a high-profile court case.
Other
I have been involved in four start up ventures as a technology lead. I have done several due diligence activities for banks, VCs and other investors. I have supported a number of entrepreneurship programmes around immersive technologies.
