{"id":185,"date":"2019-09-19T15:33:48","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T14:33:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.cs.ucl.ac.uk\/evol-genome\/?page_id=185"},"modified":"2026-01-26T17:47:56","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T17:47:56","slug":"news","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.cs.ucl.ac.uk\/evol-genome\/news\/","title":{"rendered":"News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>January 2026<\/strong> <\/span>&#8212; We start the year with a new collaborative paper, out in <em>PNAS<\/em>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2516263123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sudan&#8217;s complex genetic admixture history drives adaptation to malaria in Sudanese Copts<\/a>. The paper was led by our great colleagues in Barcelona (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibe.upf-csic.es\/comas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laura Vila-Valls, David Comas<\/a>), with our smaller role focusing on data quality checks and exploring the signatures of genetic adaptation. Spoiler: we find striking evidence of strong local genetic adaptation, through adaptive admixture, in Sudanese Copts, likely to <em>Plasmodium\u00a0<\/em>and fitting the interesting history of migration, environmental colonisation and admixture of this population.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">September 2025 <span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8212;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/ajhg\/fulltext\/S0002-9297(25)00315-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global impact of micronutrients in modern human evolution\u00a0<\/a>just published in the <em>AJHG<\/em>, led by former PhD student Jasmin Rees, and with Sergi Castellano. We use Fst and ARGs to investigate signatures of local adaptation in over 200 genes involved in the uptake, metabolism or regulation of 13 micronutriets, finding evidence that \u00a0adaptation to the local levels of dietary micronutrients (which vary widely around the world) have shaped human diversity and, likely, diet-related health.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucl.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/sep\/how-micronutrient-shortages-changed-human-dna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCL news piece here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">September 2025 <\/span><span style=\"color: #008000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">&#8212;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #008000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">New collaboration project now\u00a0as a preprint in <em>medRxiv<\/em>:\u00a0<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medrxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2025.09.01.25334828v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sudan\u2019s complex genetic admixture history drives adaptation to malaria in Sudanese Copts<\/a>, by Laura Vil\u00e0-Valls et al. Led by the lab of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibe.upf-csic.es\/comas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Comas<\/a>\u00a0(UPF, Barcelona), the work describes the genetics of Sudanese populations. We helped\u00a0identify signatures of adaptive introgression in the malaria-associated <em>ACKR1<\/em> gene during the research stay<span style=\"color: #008000\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibe.upf-csic.es\/comas\/-\/asset_publisher\/sPrPGvdjuDFS\/content\/vil\u00e0-valls-laura\/maximized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Laura Vil\u00e0-Valls<\/a>\u00a0in our group.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>July 2025 &#8212;\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000\">New collaborative paper from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dennislab.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dennis lab<\/a> (led by Daniela Soto and Jos\u00e9 M. Uribe-Salazar) just published in <em>Cell:\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/cell\/pdf\/S0092-8674(25)00739-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Human-specific gene expansions contribute to brain evolution<\/a>. In it, we identify hundreds of duplicated genes in the human genome and investigate their potential functions (with a focus on brain development) and evolutionary history in humans (with a focus on natural selection).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>May 2025 &#8212;<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Finley&#8217;s first paper in <em>bioRxiv<\/em>! May climate drive local genetic adaptation in the mitochondrial DNA? Answer here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biorxiv.org\/content\/10.1101\/2025.05.23.655374v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate associated natural selection in the human mitochondrial genome<\/a>, led by him and his first PhD supervisor <a href=\"https:\/\/florenciacamus.wordpress.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flo Camus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>March 2025 &#8212;<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0We have published a piece in The Conversation on our recent work:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/chimpanzee-genes-have-changed-over-time-to-suit-local-conditions-new-study-250973?utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=LinkedIn#Echobox=1742414131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chimpanzee genes have changed over time to suit local conditions \u2013 new study<\/a>. French translation <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/les-genes-des-chimpanzes-ont-evolue-pour-sadapter-aux-conditions-locales-selon-une-nouvelle-etude-253356\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">January 2025<\/span>\u00a0\u2013<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Starting the year with a paper, this time in <em>Science<\/em><em>.<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.adn7954\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Local genetic adaptation to habitat in wild chimpanzees<\/a> just came out in final form. In this project, led by our very own <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.cs.ucl.ac.uk\/evol-genome\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harrison Ostridge<\/a> (now PhD) and part of the brilliant\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/panafrican.eva.mpg.de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PanAf project consortium<\/a>, this study provides the first evidence of local genetic adaptation in wild chimpanzees. Analysing hundreds of exomes from faecal samples, together with environmental data, we find signatures of local genetic adaptation to habitat, both to forests and woodland-savannahs. This is a years-long project co-led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heas.at\/about\/members\/sojung-han\/\">Sojung Han<\/a>* and <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.de\/citations?user=PLH32I4AAAAJ&amp;hl=en\">Cesare de Filippo<\/a>* where we reveal high levels of genetic substructure in bonobos, with deep divergence times and surprisingly small estimated effective population sizes.
